Fights over Emission Limits in EU

There are usually very few moments when manufacturers of light commercial vehicles and fleet operators share the same opinion and, even more, are about to take the same position. And such situation has been triggered by the authorities of European Union that want to see reductions in emissions of carbon dioxide. The plans by the EU demand big cuts in the amount of carbon dioxide produced by new and used vans. The figure that the European Union authorities want to see is 175g per km on average for both new and used vans. The other requirement is the average number of miles per gallon and this figure is supposed to stand at an estimated 42.8 from the year 2014. Both car manufacturers and fleet operators and transportation societies see the plans as at least a bit unrealistic. The operators say that they already invest in used vans by buying models, which are pretty environment-friendly and now putting additional amounts of money into purchase of brand new vehicles would put their financial situation at high risk. And car makers admit that decreasing the carbon dioxide emission levels can be obtained mainly by making lighter and smaller commercial vehicles which will then not be able to compete with used vans which can carry much more and bring savings to operators.
